Research Focus "Quantum Efficiency"

The Institut of Physics launches an interdisciplinary research effort

The research effort "Quantum Efficiency" aims at identifying and harvesting generic quantum effects which prevail in complex-system environments, far from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Building on the institute's expertise in the theoretical and experimental characterization of large, composite quantum systems, this research scrutinizes the functional relevance of quantum mechanics in biology, as well as its potential to boost the efficiency of advanced technologies, from solar cell and LED to detector technology.

With the dedicated input of partners at the Institutes of Physics and Mathematics, the Departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, and Microsystems Engineering, the Fraunhofer Institutes for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF), and for Mechanics of Materials (IWM), the Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF) and the School of Soft Matter Research at the Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies (FRIAS), this new research platform exploits the unique diversity of Freiburg's research landscape, from mathematical foundations to material innovations.
